  Ceftiofur is the only one of the third generation cephalosporins approved for animal purpose.

 

Ceftiofur sodium is a broad-spectrum antibiotic against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including beta-lactamase-producing bacterial strains and anaerobes. Its antibacterial activity results from the inhibition of mucopeptide synthesis in the cell wall in a similar fashion to other cephalosporins. Ceftiofur sodium is indicated for treatment of bovine and swine respiratory disease (shipping fever, pneumonia) associated with Pasturella hemolytica, Pasturella multocida and Haemophilus somnus in lactating or non-lactating cattle and ceftiofur sodium is indicated in horses for respiratory disease associated with Strep zooepidimicus:. Ceftiofur Sodium is also approved for foot rot in cattle.

 

Ceftiofur could potentially be of usefulness in small animal infections as well, but little published data is available to   recommend its use.

    This drug has the following merits:

1. The concentration of the infected tissues is 2-4 times higher than the non-infected tissues

2. Target the infected tissue automatically

3. Ceftiofur sodium can be administered intramuscularly and intravenously.
